Allochthonous matter input in two different stretches of a headstream (Itatinga, São Paulo, Brazil) BABT
Afonso,Ana Adelina de O.; Henry,Raoul; Rodella,Rita C.S.Maimoni.
In two streches of the Itaúna stream, one in a gallery forest and the other in an herbaceous vegetation zone, litter matter input (sorted by leaves, ligneous and reproductive components) were measured during a year. In the gallery forest stretch, the direct input and lateral transport attained 713 g.m-2.year-1 and 421 g.m-1. year-1, respectively. In contrast, the herbaceous vegetation stretch showed a direct litter input and lateral transport of only 86 g.m-2.year-1 and 124 g.m-1. year-1, respectively. The empoverishment of riparian vegetation had a significant effect on the decrease of allochthonous input to stream mainly by direct input. Peaks of direct input into Itaúna stream occurred during late dry season and in the early wet season. They were...

Colorful invasion in permissive Neotropical ecosystems: establishment of ornamental non-native poeciliids of the genera Poecilia/Xiphophorus (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) and management alternatives Neotropical Ichthyology
Magalhães,André Lincoln Barroso; Jacobi,Claudia Maria.
ABSTRACT Headwater creeks are environments susceptible to invasion by non-native fishes. We evaluated the reproduction of 22 populations of the non-native livebearers guppy Poecilia reticulata, black molly Poecilia sphenops, Yucatan molly Poecilia velifera, green swordtail Xiphophorus hellerii, southern platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus, and variable platyfish Xiphophorus variatus during an annual cycle in five headwater creeks located in the largest South American ornamental aquaculture center, Paraíba do Sul River basin, southeastern Brazil. With few exceptions, females of most species were found reproducing (stages 2, 3, 4) all year round in the creeks and gravid females of all species showed small sizes indicating stunting. Juveniles were frequent in all...

Culverts in paved roads as suitable passages for Neotropical fish species Neotropical Ichthyology
Makrakis,Sergio; Castro-Santos,Theodore; Makrakis,Maristela Cavicchioli; Wagner,Ricardo Luiz; Adames,Maurício Spagnolo.
Improperly installed or poorly maintained culverts can pose a serious threat to fish by disrupting their habitat and endangering spawning success. Road culverts that are not designed for fish passage frequently can become obstacles. This can be especially problematic for migratory species, but can lead to fragmentation of resident populations as well. This study evaluated 40 culverts of 29 sites within a 25-km radius from Toledo city, Paraná State, southern Brazil, with respect to their likely effects on movement of the local ichthyofauna. We collected data on the shape and length of culverts, culvert material, waterfall height, water column depth, slope, and estimated flow velocity. Culverts were categorized by level of barrier risk for upstream...

Demonstration Restoration Measures in Tributaries of the Vindel River Catchment Ecology and Society
Holmqvist, Daniel; Vindel River Fishery Advisory Board; daniel.holmqvist@lycksele.se.
Some ecological restoration projects include elements of trial and error where new measures are repeatedly tried, evaluated, and modified until satisfactory results are achieved. Thereafter, the resulting methods may be applied on larger scales. A difficult step is judging whether developed “best-practice” methods have become reasonably ecologically functional or whether further experimentation “demonstration” methods can lead to yet better results. Here, we use a stream restoration project as a case study for evaluating methods and abiotic effects and outlining stakeholder support for demonstration restoration measures, rather than only using best-practice methods. Our work was located in the Vindel River system, a...

Diet and body shape among populations of Bryconamericus iheringii (Otophysi: Characidae) across the Campos Sulinos ecosystem Neotropical Ichthyology
Kokubun,Érika Endo; Bonato,Karine Orlandi; Burress,Edward D.; Fialho,Clarice Bernhardt.
ABSTRACT Alterations in natural landscapes, mainly caused by anthropic pressures, have been threatening the world’s biomes, including aquatic environments and its biota. This study describes the diet of Bryconamericus iheringii, and how its body shape relates to environmental variables in populations of 22 streams. A wide array of food items were found, mainly composed of allochthonous plants (50.5%) and autochthonous invertebrates (25.2%). Even though food items remained almost the same, the predominant food group significantly differed among streams, mainly in relation to environmental characteristics. There was variation in body shape primarily associated with body depth and length of the pre-dorsal region; however, these differences did not correspond...

The Trichoptera fauna in two first-order streams of Serra dos Pireneus. Goiás State, was studied from June/1993 to July/1994. The Trichoptera larvae abundances were lower in the rainy season in the two streams. The temporal distributions of the functional groups (feeding categories) was similar in both streams. The ordination by Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) detected a higher temporal heterogeneity of the Trichoptera community in one of the sampling stations, probably associated with higher discharge variation. There is a large variation of abundance of some genera between the two studied streams.

Ecological distribution of stream macroalgae in different spatial scales using taxonomic and morphological groups Rev. Bras. Bot.
Krupek,Rogério Antonio; Branco,Ciro Cesar Zanini.
We examined the ecological distribution of macroalgal communities in streams using species groups (taxonomic units = algal phyla, and morphological = morphological types) with similar structures and functions instead of the species themselves. The study was conducted from June to July/2007 in two drainage basins located in mid-southern region of Paraná State , Brazil. Evaluations of macroalgal communities took into consideration the following spatial scales: the drainage basin (the Pedras river and Marrecas river basins), shading regime (open and shaded stream segments), mesohabitats (riffles and pools), and microhabitats (sampling units of 0.05m2). A total of 29 taxa (23 subgeneric, one generic, and five vegetative groups) were identified. On these, 12...

Feeding ecology of stream-dwelling Characidae (Osteichthyes: Characiformes) from the upper Tocantins River, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Moraes,Maíra; Rezende,Carla Ferreira; Mazzoni,Rosana.
In this contribution we studied the trophic ecology of four Characidae species from the Cavalo Stream, upper Tocantins River, considering diet overlap and trophic niche breadth. The diet of the four species was composed of adult and immature insects, both autochthonous and allochthonous in origin. Autochthonous items dominated the diet of Moenkhausia dichroura (Kner, 1858), Bryconamericus sp., and Creagrutus atrisignum Myers, 1917. By contrast, allochthonous items were dominant in the diet of Astyanax bimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1758). Trophic niche breadth varied among species, with the highest value recorded for M. dichroura (0.48), followed by Bryconamericus sp. (0.39), A. bimaculatus (0.33) and C. atrisignum (0.29). Similarity analysis revealed two groups...

Fish assemblage composition in a tributary of the Mogi Guaçu river basin, southeastern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Oliveira,Alexandre Kannebley de; Garavello,Júlio César.
Fish assemblage composition and seasonal patterns of species abundance were studied in Cabaceiras stream, a tributary of the Mogi Guaçu river in São Paulo State, Brazil. Three stations were sampled monthly from June 1999 to May 2000 using sieves and small trawl net and gill nets. Fifteen fish families, 37 genera and 45 species were captured. Characiformes (27 spp.) and Siluriformes (13 spp.) were the most species-rich orders. Gymnotiformes and Perciformes were represented by two species each, and Synbranchiformes had only a single species. One group of species (approximately 75 %) persisted in the stream throughout the year. A second group (approximately 25 %) contained species that only occupy the stream for a limited period of their life cycle, and...

Food partitioning between sympatric species of Serrapinnus (Osteichthyes, Cheirodontinae) in a tropical stream - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i2.7593 Biological Sciences
Alves, Gustavo Henrique Zaia; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Tófoli, Raffael Marcos; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Novakowski, Gisele Caroline; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Hahn, Norma Segatti; UEM.
This study investigated the feeding habits of Serrapinnus microdon and S. calliurus and possible seasonal differences (rainy and dry seasons) in the utilization of food. The fish were collected monthly in Cancela stream, in the basin of the Manso/Cuiabá rivers in the State of Mato Grosso, from March 2003 to February 2004. Both species preferentially consumed resources of autochthonous origin, independently of the season. The diet of S. microdon was basically composed by immature forms of aquatic insects, with Chironomidae and Ephemeroptera predominating during the entire study period, thus showing a restricted diet (Ba = 0.27 in the rainy season, and 0.29 in the dry season). For S. calliurus, aquatic insects (especially Ephemeroptera) were equally...

Invertebrates associated with Paspalum repens (Poaceae) at the mouth of Caracu Stream (1991-1992), affluent of the Paraná River, Porto Rico - PR - Brazil BABT
Souza-Franco,Gilza Maria de; Takeda,Alice Michiyo.
Temporal distributions of Paspalum repens at the mouth of the Caracu Stream on the left margin of the Paraná River were characterized and analyzed. Samples of Paspalum repens were taken monthly from March 1991 to February 1992. Fauna consisted of many taxa: Gastropoda, Oligochaeta, Copepoda, Ephemeroptera, Hemiptera, Trichoptera, Lepidoptera, Chironomidae, Coleoptera and Hydracarina. With the exception of May 1991, low density of organisms was registered during the sampling period. During May 1991, a sharp decline in the Paraná River water level was noted. This fact suggested that organisms dispersed in the submersed vegetation during the flooding of the Paraná River must have concentrated in the stream margin and increased the density of organisms at this...

Relative size of gills of Cloeodes jaragua Salles & Lugo-Ortiz, 2003 (Ephemeroptera, Baetidae) on pool and riffle areas of streams at the Atlantic Rainforest Biota Neotropica
Gonçalves,Inês Corrêa; Cid,Bruno; Mortati,Amanda Frederico; Quesado,Letícia Barbosa; Nessimian,Jorge Luiz.
Physical environment of streams present many challenging factors to the organisms living under its influence. Water speed, one of the most important factors affecting such environments, has local influence on substrata, temperature, and oxygen levels. It acts determining species distributions and morphological and behavioral adaptations of organisms. The aim of this study was to assess the relative size of gills of Cloeodes jaragua on two mesohabitats: lentic environment (river dam) and lotic environment (fast flowing area of a stream) in Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos (RJ, Brazil). Twenty individuals were collected on each environment and width of the head and gills were taken. Lentic environment showed nymphs with broader and more constant...

Road Impacts on Abundance, Call Traits, and Body Size of Rainforest Frogs in Northeast Australia Ecology and Society
Hoskin, Conrad J.; Australian National University, Canberra, ACT, Australia; Conrad.Hoskin@anu.edu.au; Goosem, Miriam W.; James Cook University, Cairns, Queensland, Australia; miriam.goosem1@jcu.edu.au.
Frogs are potentially sensitive indicators of road impacts, with studies indicating particular susceptibility to road mortality. Calling, i.e., breeding, behavior could also be affected by traffic noise. We investigated effects on frog abundance and calling behavior where a busy highway crosses rainforest stream breeding habitat in northeast Australia. Frog abundance was repeatedly surveyed along five stream transects during a summer breeding season. Abundance of two species, Litoria rheocola and Austrochaperina pluvialis, increased significantly with perpendicular distance from the road along two transects. No trends in abundance were detected for A. pluvialis on two other transects where it was common, or for Litoria serrata on one transect where...

Spatial variations at different observational scales and the seasonal distributions of stream macroalgae in a Brazilian subtropical region Rev. Bras. Bot.
Krupek,Rogério Antonio; Branco,Ciro Cesar Zanini; Peres,Cleto Kaveski.
We examined the relationships between environmental variations in lotic ecosystems with the seasonal dynamics of macroalgae communities at different spatial scales: drainage basin of two rivers (Rio das Pedras and Rio Marrecas), shading (open and shaded stream segments), mesohabitat (riffles and pools), and microhabitats. Data collections were made on a monthly basis between January and December/2007. A total of 16 taxa were encountered (13 species and 3 vegetative groups). All of the biotic parameters (richness, abundance, diversity, equitability, and dominance) were found to be highly variable at all of the spatial scales evaluated. On the other hand, abiotic variables demonstrated differences only at mesohabitat (in terms of current velocity) and shaded...

Structure of potamoplankton along a gradient of preservation of riparian vegetation in subtropical streams Anais da ABC (AABC)
PERESIN,DENISE; TORGAN,LEZILDA C.; SCHULZ,UWE H.; CROSSETTI,LUCIANE O..
Water quality in lotic and lentic systems is greatly influenced by the land use in the adjacent areas. This study was conducted in order to assess whether different degrees of preservation of riparian forest (from well preserved with 30m wide up to degraded with < 5 m wide) influence potamoplankton community structure. The study was conducted in three streams in the upper region of the Rio dos Sinos basin, at four sampling sites, with different width of the forest. Samplings were gathered for abiotic and biological analysis in winter (August 2010) and summer (January/February 2011). The analysis of environmental and biotic variables indicated that seasonality was the main determinant of biomass patterns, regardless of the width of riparian vegetation....

The succession dynamics of a macroalgal community after a flood disturbance in a tropical stream from São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Branco,Ciro Cesar Z.; Branco,Luis Henrique Z.; Moura,Maurício Osvaldo; Bertusso,Fernando Rodrigo.
The succession dynamics of a macroalgal community in a tropical stream (20º58' S and 49º25' W) was investigated after disturbance by a sequence of intensive rains. High precipitation levels caused almost complete loss of the macroalgal community attached to the substratum and provided a strong pressure against its immediate re-establishment. After this disturbance, a weekly sampling program from May 1999 to January 2000 was established to investigate macroalgal recolonization. The community changed greatly throughout the succession process. The number of species varied from one to seven per sampling. Global abundance of macroalgal community did not reveal a consistent temporal pattern of variation. In early succession stages, the morphological form of...
